Gndevank

Gndevank

Gndevanq is one of the most important monuments of Armenian medieval architecture. It is located in Vayots Dzor region in the picturesque gorge of the Arpa River, 1km west of Gndevaz village. The monastery is surrounded by fruitful gardens that blend seamlessly with the beauty of the church to create an almost fairytale-like setting.

According to legend, the monastery was built in 40 days by Sopya, Princess of Syunik Province, who sold her earrings to pay for its construction, which in old-Armenian earrings translates to ”Gind”. This is why the church is called Gndevank . Enclosures surrounding the church and the adjacent residential rooms were built in the 17th century. Enclosures enhanced with semi-circular pyramids serve as a retaining wall, and due to the church’s construction on a steep slope contributes to the flat ground where the church stands. There are cavities and fireplaces in the walls inside the rooms. The refectory, adjacent to the south enclosures of the church, contains a big hall with basement, subsidiary rooms and hearth.
